Lectures:

Lecture 1

We were given our brief for this semester's publication design module today, as well as our lecture in advance to view. The topic of today's lesson was 'Formats.' Mr Vinod highlighted in the video lecture that the book format is the oldest form of publication, making it one of the most essential and influential forms.

A complete awareness of typography, a strong sense of space, an eye for details, and a good understanding of publishing tools are all required while designing a book (Adobe InDesign). Mr. Vinod also discusses the various formats used by various civilizations around the world, including Mesopotamia civilization (Iran-Iraq), Ancient Egyptian civilization (Egypt), Indus Valley civilization (India-Pakistan-Afghanistan), Han Chinese civilization (China), and European civilization (Europe) (Europe). Below was the lecture slide given.

Lecture 2

The topic of today's lesson was print history, which is essential since printing technology has progressed throughout time. Printing began in China by putting sheets of paper on engraved slabs and rubbing them with charcoal or graphite to remove a text in white letters on a black background. It then spread to Korea and Japan, where the printed document was a sutra written on a single sheet of paper.

The following are the lecture slides that were given to us:

Lecture 3

The topic of today's lesson is typography redux/the significance of typography in a book format. It's crucial to pick the correct typeface for our book, and one of our goals is to make the text more readable, which may be accomplished by using open, well-proportioned text typefaces. The lecture also provides examples of open and well-proportioned fonts, as well as particular styles that were included in the typefaces.

In order for the text to flow easily when reading, it's also vital to pay attention to the font size, line length, and line spacing/leading. These three criteria are intertwined because the font size influences the line length, which influences the line spacing. Another thing to keep in mind is how the text is aligned. There are five various techniques of aligning the text, each with a particular function and appearance. The following are the lecture slides that were given to us:

Lecture 4

The topic of today's presentation is grids. I've discovered that the grid is the most significant aspect of book layout. Grid is similar to the cover of a book; it defines how the book appears. Before we start typing, we need to figure out what sort of grid we want to use for the book and what kind of grid would appear best. The following are the lecture slides that were given to us:

Lecture 5

The topic of today's class is elements, or the kind of things that make up a book. All elements are made up of three main components: font, picture, and colour. It's crucial to add variety to the layout while preserving the book's overall uniformity. Avoid becoming predictable. The following are the lecture slides that were given to us:

Task 1: Exercise

1)Text Formating

2) Mock up Making

A4 (16 sheets) / A3 (8 sheets) paper, adhesive tape (masking, cellophane, scotch), steel ruler (16" if feasible), cutter, pencil and eraser, one colour marker/highlighter were all requested in this exercise.
Figure2.1 Book Size Exploration
For the image above was a mistake, I accidentally delete the image that have the whole view and I already cut it out.

Anyway, we need to choose one size to do the task and there are 4 size that we can choose.
  1. 260 x 168 mm
  2. 240 x 180 mm(selected size)
  3. 210 x 148 mm
  4. 225 x 180 mm

3) Signature folding system

For this exercise we only need an A4 paper, stapler and eraser.

Feedback:

Week2:
General- Pay attention to the text formatting, paragraph spacing. Specific- Highlight the keyword that inspired you.

Week 3:
General- Text must be linked; flow your text to determine the number of pages. Always set the columns on the master page, Leading 2-3, If paragraph space is eliminated, then indentation should be added. Before adding a page number, watch several YouTube videos.
Specific- ....

Week 4:
General- Create a flow and consistency for a form's movement while also adding diversity.
Specific- The movement was to predictable

Week 5:
General- One type of embellishment is the pullquote. Choose typefaces with low contrast for lengthy reading sessions (bodoni). Finish and update all exercises, including my own grid system and tale, next week, and apply typography.
Specific- ....

Refelction:

Experience:
While doing the exercises, it was actually an interesting and challenging experience for me. The amount of work also were quite lot but luckily I made it all in time.

Observation:
I've noticed that we've all been under a lot of stress this semester owing to the workload. However, we were all able to complete all of the tasks and not give up in the end. In the middle of the semester, I felt like quitting up a few times, but I'm pleased I finished everything.

Findings:
Overall I already try my best to done all the work, I also learn quite a lot about book design, the layouts, the visuals, the importance of grids.
