Lectures:
Week 1 / Typographic Systems :
At the new start of the whole semester, we have been brief about what we should learn from this semester. Due to the pandemic, we started our class online again and this was an unfortunate situation.
For the first class of advanced typography, Mr.Vinod introduces to us the 8 different typographic systems and it was quite a novelty.
Axial System: All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis.
Figure1.1 example of Axial System from Pinterest
Radial System: All elements are extended from a point of focus.Figure1.2 Radial System from Pinterest
Dilatational System: All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
Figure1.3 Dilatational System from Pinterest
Random System: Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.Figure1.4 Random System from Pinterest
Grid System: A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
Figure1.8 Bilateral System from PinterestWeek 2 / Typographic composition:
Principles of design composition- Emphasis, isolation, repetition, symmetry and asymmetry, alignment, perspective are dominant in principles underpinning design composition.
The rule of third- The rule of third is a photographic guide to composition, it basically suggests that a frame can be divided into 3 columns and 3 rows. The intersecting lines are used as a guide to place the points of interest, within the given space.
Environment Grid- This system is based on the exploration of an existing structure or numerous structures combined. An extraction of crucial lines both curved and straight is formed. The designer then organizes his information around this super-structure, which includes non-objective elements to create a unique and exciting mixture of texture and visual stimuli.Figure2.1 Example of environment gridForm and movement- This system is based on the exploration of an existing Grid System. Mr.Vinod developed this system to get students to explore; the multitude of options the grid offer; to dispel the seriousness surrounding the application of the grid system.Figure2.2 Example of form and movements
Week 3/ Context and Creativity:
Handwriting-Handwriting is important in typography because the first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to directly imitate handwriting would become the basis or standard for form, spacing, and convention mechanical type would try and mimic.Figure3.1 evolution of the Latin alphabet
Week 4: Designing type
Research-Before we created a type, we should know the history of the type, Type anatomy and type conventions. We should also know terminologies, sidebearing, metrics, hinting.
This process is to determine the type's purpose or what it would be used for, what different applications it will be used in such as whether the typeface is for school busses or airport signage, etc.
Sketching-If you are confident with your hand you can try sketching first before made them out in digital.
Digitization-Software such as Fontlab and glyphs app can help you generate your typeface to digitalize.
Testing-Depending on the typeface category the readability and legibility of the typeface become an important consideration. However, it is not as crucial if the typeface is a display type. where expression of the form takes a little more precedence.
Deploy-Even after deploying a completed typeface there are always teething problems that did not come to the fore during the prototyping and testing phases. Thus, the task of revision doesn't end upon deployment

Task 2: Type and playHere we go again, the last semester's nightmare. For this exercise, we need to find or take an image with a natural and geometric pattern. We need to explore the image and trace it with 4 letters or numbers.

Feedbacks
Week 1-General feedbacks: Before changing point sizes and hierarchy, start with the same point size for all texts. Alignment is crucial for establishing hierarchy and flow across the design.
-Specific feedback: No specific feedback for this week.
Week 2
-General feedbacks: Make a point of looking at the page's negative space. The importance of letter spacing and tracking cannot be overstated. To ensure that a PDF with a visible grid is uploaded.
-Specific feedbacks: All of the work need to do it better.
Week 3
-General feedbacks: Ensure that the blog's embedded items are displayed. Don't try to complete the refining process in one day.
-Specific feedbacks: Overall is better, needs some improvement in letter spacing.
Week 4
-General feedbacks: When designing a font, consider the following factors: stroke weight consistency, number of development stages, if the shape changed while keeping the appearance of the main reference, and if there is an opportunity for improvement.
-Specific feedbacks: Not challenging at all, but acceptable typeface.
Week 5
-General feedbacks: Always ask yourself that the consistency of weight on strokes/number of stages for development /if the form evolved while maintaining the look of the main reference / if there is room for improvements.
-Specific feedbacks: The letters were too bright, utilize the lighter shades of the image.
Experience:
For the first 3 weeks, I'm still feel bad for my own decision-making. I put a lot of time into the 8 typographic systems but I still feel something empty, especially the random systems. I feel sorry again for Mr.Vinod. The type and play I was quite confident when it shows up but it also let me struggle a long time, the final outcome was not satisfactory for my own even Mr.Vinod say that was not challenging work, even I don't want to agree with that but I still need to accept it as an advice.
Findings:
After this task, I started to think about what weak points that I have to improve. My design in this task was trash for me obviously, the details, construction even the whole font I was clearly mess up here.
Observation:
After finishing this task, I finally know how difficult typography was. Respect to all my classmate that did it very well and I really hope one day i can learn from them. Research is a very important and necessary move to do, if we don't have a basic concept of what we gonna do, it probably will be confused you all the way. Details are also very important, details can easily influence each result we have made.
Further reading:
This youtube video really help me a lot in understanding each type of typographic system.
This article reminds me what should i have before creating our own style in typeface. A fonts that we choose can easily convey a lot of emotion into it. We also need to consider our audience when choosing the type size, If we’re creating a website for an over 60’s community, it’s probably a good idea to avoid font sizes 8 and 10 as that will be bothersome to read for many of the readers. On the other hand type that is too large can overpower a design and make it look a little less sophisticated.
